Russian children go to school at the age between 6 and 7 depending on individual development of each child. Eleven-year secondary Education in Russian is compulsory since September 1, 2007. The eleven-year school term is split into elementary (grades 1-4), middle (grades 5-9) and senior (grades 10-11) classes. Primary is 4 years, secondary is 5 and high is 2. After the fourth grade, children continue in the same school. Children of elementary classes are normally separated from other classes within their own floor of a school building. They are taught, ideally, by the same teacher through all four elementary grades (except for physical training and, if available, foreign languages). The most controversial change that already took place was the introduction of national standard tests (EGE - Unified State Exam) required for entry to university. All school children take the multiple-choice tests which are marked by computer and could not be more different from the previous system, which relied on oral tests at the universities. EGE was introduced to make it easier for students from the provinces to apply to study in other cities, where previously they would have had to apply in person. There is much criticism about EGE though. The opponents say it is dumbing down Russian Education, with questions such as: 'What colour eyes did Anna Karenina have?' Winnie-the-Pooh, created by by A. A. Milne was made popular among the Soviet junior readers by a Soviet poet and children's writer Boris Zakhoder. The writer had first seen a book about Winnie the Pooh by Alan Miln in 1958. He liked it so much and decided to make it known to Russian readers. On July 13 1960 Boris Zakhoder published a book about Winnie the Pooh. 9 years later a favorite Soviet cartoon series by director Feodor Khitrook were created. The director made Winnie merry and carefree, whereas it was a thoughtful and dreamy Character according to the book. Even though Zakhoder considered that Feodor Khitrook misrepresented the main hero, he admitted it was the best cartoon interpretation. The statistic records show that from 5 to 7 % (in different years) of the population of Russian know English and it is most popular foreign language in Russia and other Post -Soviet countries. Although amost all people have learned English at schools or high schools and did well, many of them feel uneasy to speak English and face a certain communication barrier. This can be partially explained by the fact that for long years Russian served to be an international language of the countries belonged to so called "social camp". There were and actually are few travellers to Russia from English-speaking countries, not many exchange students and people that come on Business. Therefore even possessing formal knowledge of English, Russians have little need and chance to practise it and rarely can speak freely. Besides, for long time learning English was quite formal and not focused on real communication. The compulsory secondary Education is free in Russia. It provides the minimal required level of education and enables a woman to continue her studies. There are also private schools with high fees. As a rule the curricular are the same for boys and girls as they study together.
