Russian surnames may originally denote "son of" or "serf of". For surnames ending with "ov" or "in", there is an "-a" feminine ending. Thus, for example, "Ivanova" means "belonging to John" or "John's daughter".
The Russian equivalent of "Smith, Jones, and Brown" (that is, the generic most popular surnames) is Иванов, Петров, Сидоров, or "Johnson, Peterson, and Sidorson". The last of these, Sidorov - "of Sidor" is actually not a very common surname at all, while Sidor as a given
